Top Ten Fastest Aircraft in the world

Top Ten Fastest Aircraft in the world

Traveling in air has been one of the most amazing things that a human can do in this world. It is also the fastest way to travel around the world.Plane carry things, peoples and many other things from one place to another in a very less time. With the development in technology there are aircraft which take only minutes to reach their destination.

There are many aircraft that has exceed the speed of mach 2.0. Few of them are military aircraft and some are simple flying for reconnaissance purposes. But there is always something special with every aircraft. Just imagine if you are traveling in such a aircraft then you are the fastest than any others, But you are not the fastest, you are just a passenger. Here we see the World top ten fastest air craft, which the masterpiece of military engineering.

Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker

The Su-27 is a big long-range air fighter, comparable with U.S. F-15 but better in many respects. Its top speed is 2.35 mach brings it to the very edge of USSR craftsmanship having twin engine and first fly-by-wire on a Russian jet. It was built to counter the new American 3.5 gen fighters as F-15 Eagle.  It is armed with 30 mm gun 10 external pylons, heat seeking and medium range missiles.Because of its speed and all accomplishments, it is very popular even today 35 years after the first flight of Flanker (1977). Some of them are:

  • Sukhoi Su-30
  • Sukhoi Su-33
  • Sukhoi Su-34
  • Sukhoi Su-35
  • Sukhoi Su-37

General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark

Next on top ten is F-11. It is not a fighter but it is tactical bomber and able to fly at the high speed of 2.5 Mach. It was retired in 1998, and before retirement, it had 9 hard points and 2 weapon bays, together being able to carry a payload of 14,300 kg of bombs, a nuclear bomb, air-to-air missiles or 2000 machine guns could be fitted.  The Aardvark was the first aircraft with configuration which is why it was tested for carrier-based operations, however this was never completed.

McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle

The F-15 has been the most successful aircraft ever built and is still in service of the US Air Force. F-15 Eagle has twin-engine and thrust-to-weight ratio of  1:1 can carry the 18,000 kg aircraft to more than 2.5 mach.F-15 was introduced in 1976 and may also be the part of air force beyond 2025. there are almost 1200 F-15s built and exported to Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Israel. It can load Sparrow,Sidewinder,120-AMRAAM, drop bobs on its 11 hardpoints.

Mikoyan MiG-31 Foxhound

The next aircraft in our list is Mikoyan MiG-31 Foxhound. The top speed of this plane is 2.83 mach. The Mikoyan MiG-31 Foxhound is a Russian-built interceptor aircraft, it’s designed in such a way that it can go straight, very fast, in order to destroy invading planes as a modernized replacement to older MiG-25 Foxbat in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It has twin-engine with thrust so that it can fly at high speed in both low and high altitudes. Four Mikoyan MiG-31 Foxhound can control a front of 900 kilometers in length. Its production end in 1994.

XB-70 Valkyrie

The XB-70 Valkyrie was a unique aircraft which together contains six engines. These six engines together could accelerate the 240,000 kilograms aircraft to a speed of 3 mach. This speed resulted in the frame of aircraft to being heated up to as much as 330°C on some areas of aircraft. This extreme speed was needed for 2 reasons:

  1. To accelerate away from Soviet interceptors.
  2. To be able to escape the blast of nuclear bombs that it was capable of dropping.

It can carry the fuel needed for the 6,900 kilometers flight.and 14 nuclear bombs. XB-70 Valkyrie aircraft had its first flight in 1964 and is now retired, only two were built.

Bell X-2 Starbuster

The Starbuster wan an American aircraft which had its first flight in 1955 and was retired in 1956. To check this its area of investigation was to see how aircraft behave while flying at high speed of 2.0 mach. It did, not carry any weapons and back-swept wing which made it have little air-resistance and was that able to achieve the stunning speed of 3.196 mach in 1956. Soon after that speed was attained the pilot made a sharp turn and aircraft got out of control. He could not regain the control of aircraft and bailed out.Only the parachute of the escape was opened and he hit the ground with high speed. This fatal crash ended the Starbuster program.

Mikoyan Mig-25 Foxbat

The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25 was a super fast interceptor and bomber aircraft (it’s speed still not matched today with anyone) Designed by Soviet Union’s Mikoyan-Gurevich Bureau. Its first flight is in 1964 and entered in service 1970 with a top speed of 3.2  mach.Over 1100 Foxbats were built form 1964 to 1984.Its use is a limit and only in the hand of Russia,Syria, Algeria and Turkmenistan. It was the fastest plane ever.

Lockheed YF-12

This aircraft was an American interceptor prototype with the high speed of 3.35 mach. It almost looked like SR-71 Blackbird and featured three air to air missiles. The reasons why it looks like SR-71 because SR-71 was based on YF-12 and both of them had a same designer.Only 3 YF-12’s were built but the program still made it into the history books due to its high speed.

Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird

After its introduction in 1966 it has been used by USAF and NASA. Blackbirds all used for looking up the enemies and experimental research. It features stealth technology but it it was, spotted by the enemy by opponent forces. The Blackbirds was too fast that the air in front of it did not have time to escape, hence, building up a huge pressure, and increase in temperature. The temperature of the aircraft reach to several hundred degrees high and result in expanding in metal, hence it had to be built by too small pieces.Because of it SR-71 actually leaked its oil even while standing. The aircraft is capable of flying at the high speed of 3.2 mach at 85,000 feet.

North American X-15

North American X-15 is the first on our top ten fastest aircraft in the world list.It has the world record of fastest manned aircraft. Its maximum speed was 6.70 mach (about 7,200 km/h) which it attained on 3rd October 1967 thanks to the pilot Eilliam j. “Pete” knight. To be stable at these high velocities.Just imagine sitting in a rocket measuring only 15 m in length and then being dropped, must have a truly magnificent feeling! The X-15 has used at such high speed it used rocket thrusters! This made it possible to reach altitudes higher than 100 kilometers, Which is one of its world records.

  • It was first operational space plane
  • It got to a height of more than 100 km.
  • It flew more than six times the speed of sound (mach 6.70).
